In 1984, Nylon Cheng began
collecting college diplomas from associates so he could register for 22
publication licenses and resist the Taiwan Garrison Command’s efforts to seize
and confiscate the magazine as well as the Bureau of Information’s publication
bans. The magazine never missed an issue as it fought for freedom of speech,
publishing from March 12, 1984, to November 11, 1989.
Each Freedom Era Weekly issue sold tens of thousands of copies at the peak of the magazine’s circulation. It exposed scandals the KMT repressed by limiting freedom of speech, and established record numbers of bans and orders to cease publication.
